George Washington Walker was a confederate war veteran (1862-1863). There is a book of letters which George wrote home to his wife during the war. He was a 2nd Lieutenant from Lenoir, NC 66th NC Inf. Regiment. He fought at Petersburg, Va, North James, VA, Wilmington, NC and Fort Fisher under the command of Colonel Duncan Moore. Another source shows that George was in the North Carolina 1st Artillery Regiment, Company E, also known as NC 10th Regiment.

Mr. George Walker of this county died on the 26th of July. Mr. Walker was one of the nominees of the Republican party during the late election for the State Legislature. He enjoyed the confidence of the people of the county as an upright and honorable man, and in his death the county loses a most valuable citizen.
