Son of Arthur N and Sadie Braswell. Husband of Marion E Hughes, Brother of Martha Kornahrens and Baby Boy Braswell, Father of 4 children.
Jacob was adopted in 1933 after the death of his mother and baby brother, by Cliff and Maude Hughes. Jake & his sister Martha, lived near each other in Cope SC. I believe Cliff was related to Jacob's mother, I just have not yet made the direct link. The second picture, is of my dad and his sister before they were separated.
Jake enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1947 in Atlanta Georgia at the age of 16 and trained in Mayport Fla. He was stationed in Staten Island, NY till 1949. New Bedford Conn. 1949-1950. Delaware Bay from 1950-1951. Honolulu Hawaii 1951-1953, Staten Island NY 1954-1959. The LightHouse at Angel Island and Pigeon Point California 1960-1964, TownsendsInlet NJ station 1965-1967, Atlantic City NJ station 1970-1971, Delaware Bay 1968-1970 and Rockaway NY 1972-1973.
He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, CG Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Ribbon and Rifle Marksmenship Ribbon.
June 16th 1969 he became Senior Chief Boatswain Mate
He was awarded Coxswain Insigna pin on November 7th 1972 and retired December 1st 1973 Rank E9
Jake served on the CGC Kukui, CGC Firebush, CGC Campbell, CGC Newell, CGC Ironwood, CGC Winniebago, CGC Manitou, Five Fathom Lightship and the Delaware Lightship. His core values were of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.

Jake met Marion while stationed in NY. They married January 23, 1956
My daddy loved to cook and was an avid bowler. He enjoyed playing poker and riding roller coasters.
You are truly loved and missed!
