Gowin enlisted as a private into Company I of the 78th Illinois Infantry and mustered into service on September 1, 1862. He was in the Civil War from 1862 until 1865 and was in many battles, most notably the Battle of Chickamauga. The area was named the "River of Death" long before this Civil War battle occurred, a sad premonition of the horrors of War that this land would see.

Gowin was fortunate to have survived this battle, but many of his comrades from Macomb did not. Other battle Gowin fought in were Missionary Ridge, Atlanta Campaign, Buzzard Roost Gap, Peach Tree Creek and he ended his Military Career with 100,000 men with Sherman's march to Sea.

He died on June 4, 1903 and is buried next to his wife Sarah, in the Oakwood Cemetery.
