The son of George & Julia Anna (Wolf) Shreiner, in 1860 he was a laborer living with his family in Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 4" tall and had black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Marietta, Lancaster County, August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863. At muster-out, the army docked his final pay $2.99 for "difference in price of clothing" and additionally for loss of his knapsack, canteen, and haversack, financial hits levied in varying amounts on almost every member of the regiment. He also enlisted in Lancaster February 1, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 6 as a private with Co. E, 107th Pennsylvania Infantry, commanded by Col. E. D. Roath, and honorably discharged with his company July 13, 1865. (The statement in the attached obituary that he "served over two years" with the 107th Pennsylvania is incorrect. In fact, he spent barely one year counting both of his enlistments.)
