Mildred Thie
Mildred "Shorty" Maxine Thie, 85, of Mediapolis, died Monday, July 25, 2005, at Prairie Ridge Care Center in Mediapolis.
Born April 22, 1920, in Roscoe, she was the daughter of Russell and Edith Johnson Pilling. On Nov. 17, 1950, she married Hugo "Hick" Thie in Fairfield.
Mrs. Thie worked for J.I. Case and transferred to Chicago with McDonald Airplane during Word War II. She worked as a beautician for 50 years and was at one time an instructor at the Burlington Beauty Academy.
She was a graduate of Burlington Beauty Academy. She and her sister bought Neighborhood Beauty Shop on Osborn and Sunnyside streets in Burlington and she later owned and operated a beauty shop in Mediapolis. She was a 1937 graduate of Mediapolis High School. She attended Harmony Bible Church in Danville. She enjoyed all sports and quilting.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Joyce Hollingsworth of Mediapolis; one son, Brent Thie of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Thelma McMurray of Fresno, Calif., and Fran Lundell and Alice Fye, both of Burlington.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Thie will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Baker officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Mediapolis Public Library.
