He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church. He attended Christ Lutheran School. After completing his education, Norman worked with his father on the family farm. Norman was united in marriage on June 28, 1951 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Leigh to Verona Schroeder. On January 22, 1952 Norman entered the US Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on October 22, 1953. After serving his country, Norman returned to farming.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church where he served as trustee and on the cemetery board. He was a life member of the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, going to fairs, farm shows, and raising cattle.
