Jean Chartier (nee John Carter) is the son of Samuel Carter and Mercy Brooks. He is also known as Jean-Joseph and Jean-Baptiste, depending on the record/site. The baptismal record in the Drouin Collection for Quebec simply states his name as Jean. He was captured in the 29 February 1704 French and Indian attack on historic Deerfield. 56 men, women, and children were massacred, before 112 villagers were taken captive and forced on an unforgiving 300 mile winter march, to Canada.

Two of his sons came to Connecticut and fought in the Revolutionary War on the US side. His father's will (in Hartford, Connecticut), left him money if he would return to Hartford to live, but Jean never did.

Jean married Marie Courtemanche on 29 October 1718, in Rivière-des-Prairies, Montréal. They are the parents of the following (verified with PRDH, except for *):
1) Joseph (1719-1789) md Marie-Ursula Hubert
2) Marie-Renee (1721-1722)
3) Marie-Angelique (1723-1804) md Pierre-Paul Hubert dit Hebert
4) Jacques (1725-1750)
5) Jean-Baptiste (1726-1804) md Marie-Angelique-Marguerite Roy
6) Pierre (1727-1727)
7) Marie-Josephe (1729-1750)
8) Pelagie (1731-1749) md Claude Hubert dit Hebert
9) Jacques* (1731-1750)
10) Theodore (1734-1796) md Therese Loupe dit Rochelet

He was baptized at the age on 28, on 31 January 1724, in Riviere-des-Praires, Quebec.

Jean was buried on 5 August 1772, in St-Antoine-sur-Richelieu parish, Verchères, Quebec.
