Norman was the son of Charles Castles and Emily Victoria (nee Kew). He married Olive May Coade in 1914 and enlisted for WW1 on Jul. 14, 1915 giving Olive as his next of kin, noting that both his parents were dead, and address as Albert Park, Victoria. He didn't see active duty as he had the first of several children on the way; Jean Sarah Margaret born in 1915, Norman John in 1917, Ivy Emily in 1919, Olive Muriel in 1920 and Janet May in 1925.
