BETTENDORF - Mary Ellen Rose Simms, a resident of Bettendorf, died on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at Meadow Lawn Nursing Center, Davenport. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, where a prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mary was born March 29, 1933, in Bettendorf, the daughter of Seferino and Tadea (Gomez) Arguello. She was united in marriage on Aug. 25, 1967, to Oral Wayne Simms in Rock Island. Mary was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes School. She was employed at Devonshire and later at Economy Crescent Cleaners in Bettendorf, where she retired after 30 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a past member of the VFW Post No. 9128 Women's Auxiliary. In her earlier years she enjoyed dancing and going to country music concerts. Every year she looked forward to the Mississippi Valley Fair. Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Oral; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Marc Brandt, of Eldridge, Iowa; her daughter, Malissa Simms, of Bettendorf; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Diannia Simms, of Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Hannah and Kraig; her sisters, Modesta Hayes, Mary Dahms and Tillie Miller, all of Bettendorf, Josephine Mendoza, of Rock Island, Victoria Terronez, of East Moline, and Savina Navarez, of Riverside, Calif.; her brother, Jesse Arguello, of Madera, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Stephinia Gutierrez, and her brothers, Frank and David Arguello.
