Joseph Timothy "Joe" Hammond, 62, of Brazil, passed away unexpectedly at 12:09 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in St. Vincent Clay County Hospital's emergency room. He was the owner and operator of Hammond's Auto and Truck Repair in Brazil. He was born Jan. 13, 1952, in Terre Haute, to Chester Hammond and Wanda Taylor Hammond.

Survivors include his wife, Patty Hoopingarner Hammond, whom he married June 26, 1976, in Terre Haute; a son, Aron Hammond and wife Lee Ann of Staunton; a daughter, Lisa Hammond of Brazil; a grandson, Jase William Hammond; two sisters, Jennifer Kiefer and husband Jim of Fremont, Calif., and Tracy LeClercq and husband Raymond of Terre Haute; three brothers, Brad Hammond and wife Eileen of Georgetown, Ill., George Hammond and wife Angie of Clinton, and Dale Hammond of Terre Haute; a stepbrother, Steve Lawrence of Terre Haute; four brothers-in-law, Bob Hoopingarner and wife Debbie of Terre Haute, Jim Hoopingarner of Tampa, Fla., Jeff Hojem of Florida, and Vernon Hojem and wife Lou Ann of Terre Haute; and a sister-in-law Ginger Hoopingarner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Bill Hoopingarner; his mother-in-law, Fanchon Hoopingarner; and Vernon Hojem.

Joe and Patty had hosted many foreign exchange students over the years from many countries including Germany, Russia, India, China, Japan and Pakistan. He enjoyed playing pool and was a member of a pool league. He loved the outdoors, and fishing and hunting.

Funeral services for Joe will be 7 p.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., West Terre Haute, with Pastor Doug Parkey officiating. Cremation has been scheduled after all services. Visitation will be 4 p.m. until service time Friday. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association with envelopes available in the funeral home.
