According to the R.D. Green's "Greenelogy" (copyright 2013), Israel Apfelgrun, was born at 5:00 a.m. in Stryj, Galacia, Austrian Poland (now Ukraine), to Esther (Gruber)and Jacob Apfelgrun. He had one sister, Helen, and one brother, Sigismund "Selig."

Israel married Devorah "Dora" Seif circa 1890 and fathered seven children: Minnie, Esther, Regina "Rose," Blanche, Jacob "Jack," Adele "Ida," and Isidore Harry (who later legally changed his name to Irving Green).

Israel emigrated to America in 1908, sailing from Antwerp on the S.S. Samland, from January 2 through 16. Dora and their six children joined him in New York a year or so later. Their seventh and last child was born in New York. When is unclear, but Israel opened a rye bread bakery on New York's Lower East Side.

Israel was killed on a hot summer night outside the bakery during a fight when he hit his head on the sidewalk or street curb. Official records indicate that his death resulted from a "fracture of the base of skill" and was ruled a homicide. His height is difficult to make out in the records, but he was either 5'4" or 5'9", weighted 138 pounds, and had brown hair and eyes.

He was survived by his wife, all seven children, and both siblings. Survivors may have included a sister- and brother-in-law as well, but their dates of death are unknown at this time.
