Wencel James Swoboda was born on 15 May 1860 to Vaclav (Wenzel) and Anna Bohaukowa Swoboda, in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. In 1867, the family moved to Henryville Township, Renville County, Minnesota, where they farmed near Bechyn.
On 26 October 1889, Wencel married Emma Kodet, the daughter of Joseph F. and Theresa Swoboda Kodet, in Bechyn, Minnesota.
When Wencel’s father, Vaclav Swoboda, died in 1890, Wencel took charge of the farm. He raised fruit trees, Durham cattle, and Poland-China hogs.
Wencel and Emma had eight children, Katherine “Katie” was born in 1893 and married Thomas F. Dunsmore, Emma was born in 1896 and married James F. Spevacek, Anna Hattie was born in 1898 and married Joseph L. “Joe” Kozubik, Sr., Eleanora C. “Ella” was born in 1900 and married Albert John Knudson, Mary Helen was born in 1906, Jennie was born in 1908, Wencel Joseph, Jr., was born in 1912, and Joseph R. was born in 1915 and married Beatrice Knisley.
