Our beloved dad and grandpa returned to his Heavenly Father on February 10, 2010, and will be greatly missed.

Born March 26, 1924 in Midvale, Utah to Lyle Dewey and Alfreda (Myers) Watkins.

Graduated from Huntington Park High School, Los Angeles, California, in 1941. Served as an LDS missionary in the Northwestern North America mission.

Married his soulmate, Doreen Taylor, on June 23, 1950 in the Mesa, Arizona Temple.

Al grew up in Los Angeles and developed a love of the ocean as a Sea Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

He was a master fisherman and seaman and worked three years as a commercial fisherman. His fishing adventures extended to the far away shores of Costa Rica.

He enjoyed building boats and taking his family sport fishing off the Southern California and Mexico coast.

He loved to work, especially with his father, Lyle, and brother, Mel. Together, they started and operated 'Watkins Brothers Pool Plastering,' which became the largest pool plastering business in Southern California during the '50s and '60s, where they invented and perfected the ability to pump cement through a rubber hose. They even built custom pools for many Hollywood stars, including James Franciscus and Bob Hope.

Later in life, he was self-employed and ran his own backhoe excavation service. He loved a challenge and no job was too big or difficult for Big Al, he would always find a way to get the job done.

Preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mahlon (Mel) Watkins. Survived by his wife, Doreen Watkins; sisters, Deanna Klinell and Julie Whipple; his daughters, Cheryl Lyon and Janine Duff; son, Blaine Watkins, and a legacy of sixteen "Grands" and nine "Greats."

Graveside funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the American Fork City Cemetery, 26 West 600 North, American Fork, Utah.
