LOUIS POLK BISHOP;
Louis Polk Bishop, known as "Uncle Lou" by family and friends, passed away August 7, 2008 at age 86. Louis was born in San Antonio to Merrill and Jeanie Bishop on Christmas Day, 1921.

He attended Jefferson High School and then Amherst College and the University of Texas. He briefly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. For several years, he worked at Vaughan and Sons Lumber and soon after, he was a partner with Tom Longeno at an insurance agency.

With a tremendous curiosity and a zest for life, Louis owned Navion Aviation and Seguin Aviation, and often flew their planes to buyers in Europe. With his friend, Jack Hardie, he began Scientific Farms where they raised hydroponics tomatoes which were sold, mostly to Handy Andy Grocery Stores.

Through this endeavor, he became president of the National Plastic Greenhouse Growers Association. During Hemisfair in 1968, he was responsible for the indoor plants and beautiful Wall of Flowers at the Women's Pavilion.

At the same time he owned B & Greenhouses which specialized in live restaurant table arrangements, and poinsettias and the new style large poinsettia hanging baskets. He was on a first name basis with a President, and he and his wife enjoyed the hospitality at the Ranch.

Louis was among the group of investors who brought the Spurs Basketball Team to San Antonio and he was a huge fan for many years. He owned a small percent of oil and gas leases out of Kansas City, Missouri and sat on that Board of Directors.

He was an early shareholder in Datapoint Computers and, subsequently, a part owner of Datatrend, a computer service company. He was a partner in a construction company, a brick company and, lastly, he owned Foree Mfg. Co., a factory making military uniforms for government contracts, including West Point and the Air Force Academy.

Since he was a young boy, he traveled throughout the United States with his parents, who were educators. As an adult, he and his wife toured the United States and Europe on extended vacations. He sat on the Board of Directors of several local institutions. He was a top notch domino player and golfer and a winner, too!

He was an enthusiastic participant in life and took on the problems of anyone and solved them, laughing all the way. In his businesses he was revered by his employees and was a mentor to some, He and his wife, Elisabeth Vaughan Bishop recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by his wife, Elisabeth, his brother-in-law, Curtis Vaughan, Jr. and wife Phyllis, nephews Curtis Vaughan III and wife, Karen, Robert Vaughan and wife Melissa, George Vaughan and wife Claire, and Richard Vaughan and wife Donna and many great nieces and nephews. The Vaughan nephews will be the pallbearers. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bishop and her family in Massachusetts, a cousin, Fay Holmes of New Braunfels, Texas, and a cousin, William Yahn of Austin, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and a half-brother, James Bishop.
