James Motley Booker, MD, age 89, of Callao, died on December 9, 2003. He was born March 11, 1914, the son of the late Dr. Robert Eubank Booker and Mabel Motley Booker. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert E. Booker Jr., and C. Leonard Booker, MD. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Scott Booker; daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Scott Booker Carmichael of Roanoke, Katherine Louisa "Kitty Lou" Booker Cox and husband, William Gerald Cox of King William, and Mary Lynn Booker, LNP, of King William; grandchildren, Amy Todd Carmichael of Greenville, S.C., James Andrew Carmichael of Roanoke, and Jennifer Lynn Cox of King William; sister, Elizabeth Tod Booker Norris of Hague; sister-in-law, Wilhelmina McDonald Booker of Farnham; and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Booker graduated from Callao High School in 1931. He received a degree in history from the University of Richmond in 1935 and his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1941. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army Medical Corps during the invasion of North Africa, then as battalion surgeon with the Third Infantry Division. He took part in the landing on Anzio Beachhead, the capture of Rome and Munich, and the raising of the U.S. flag before Hitler's residence at Berchtesgaden. After the war, Dr. Booker practiced medicine in Northumberland County for 40 years. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Callao since childhood, a charter member of the Lions Club, and a member of the Northumberland County School Trustee Electoral Board. He was one of the founders and the first president of the Northumberland County Historical Society and also was a member of the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society, the King and Queen County Historical Society, the Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library, the Jamestown Society, and the Society of the Cincinnati. His professional memberships included the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, Northern Neck Medical Association (of which his father was a charter member), Virginia and American Academies of Family Physicians, Virginia Advisory Hospital Council, and Richmond Academy of Medicine. The family will receive friends at the residence from 4 to 6 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 12 at 2 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, Callao, Va., with interment at Farnham Baptist Church Cemetery, Farnham, Va. The family requests that rather than flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Northumberland County Historical Society, P.O. Box 221, Heathsville, Va. 22473.
