WPA records have his date of death as 4 Dec 1882, but he is listed in the Iowa Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines book in 1885 and his gravestone says that he died in 1887.

Suggested edit: Thomas & Ella had a daughter, Eva (b~1875 IA) - all 3 are found together in the 1880 census with a Cleveland family whom I believe was a sister to Thomas.
