Richard L. Altfeld, 95, of Elyria, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 following a brief illness. Born in Elyria, he was a life long resident.

He owned and operated the family business, the former Elyria Belting and Machinery, now Blue Star Metal Recycling Co., most of his life, retiring in 1983. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps now the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He was a member of Temple B'Nai Abraham in Elyria. He served as treasurer of the Temple for 30 years, and one time served on the Boards of the Red Cross, The Elyria Memorial Hospital, The Elyria Library and The Lorain County Savings and Trust, now First Merit Bank. After retirement he and his wife Ruth, spent seven months a year for 28 years at their condo in Weston, Florida.

He leaves his wife, Ruth (nee Wittow), to whom he was married 70 years; daughter, Barbara (Danny) Littman of Virginia Beach, Virginia; son, Ted (Helene) Altfeld of Elyria; grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Littman, Simone (Michael) Deitch and Dena Altfeld; great grandchildren, Benjamin, Ravi and Clara.

Special thanks to his caregiver, Pam Towner.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Young; and a brother, Robert.

Service was held on Monday, July 8, 2013, 1 P.M. at Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria. Rabbi Lauren Werber officiated.

Burial was in Salem Cemetery, Lorain.
