Son of Ernest Lee Jahncke, New Orleans, LA shipbuilder and Ass't Sect'y of the Navy (1929-1933} during Herbert Hoover's administration. He was a Plank Owner (part of the commissioning crew) on the USS New Orleans (CA-32) when she was commissioned in February 1934. His sister Cora was the sponsor for USS New Orleans when the ship was launched in April 1933. His father was instrumental in having the new 10,000 ton treaty cruiser named after the Jahncke's hometown of New Orleans. He served in the US Naval Reserve during WW2 as a Lieutenant (jg).
