Philip enlisted in the 33rd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. He fought at Gettysburg. He was killed in action during the Battle at Lookout Mountain in Tennessee after being hit twice, once in the arm and then second in the heart. His body was buried and a wooden marker placed at the base of Lookout Mt.
