Pelagie Chouteau was the daughter of Major Pierre Chouteau and his first wife, Pelagie Kierseneau/Kiersereau. Mother's maiden name is spelled differently by source. Because Pelagie Chouteau was Pierre's only daughter, the Indians called her "La Femme Tout Seule" or "The Lone Woman." Pelagie Chouteau married Bartholomew Berthold 12 January 1811. Mr. Berthold was Tyrolese by birth and came to the United States in 1798.
