When George Howard "Howard" Goforth was born on February 3, 1881, in Indiana, his father, Hugh, was 32 and his mother, Amanda, was 30. He had five brothers. In 1902 Howard and his older brother, Will, were working on the railroad in Losantville, Indiana when the Goforth family in Butlerville contracted typhoid fever. Leaving his job, he traveled to Butlerville to assist his family. He died on April 7, 1902, in Butlerville, Indiana, from typhoid at the age of 21. All other affected Goforth family members survived. He never married.
