About founding Pastor Barbara Mary Purcell

In Loving Memory of BARBARA MARY PURCELL Lifelong resident of Whittier and founding pastor of Cornerstone Celebration Center, formerly named Cornerstone Fellowship, was called home to Glory on Sunday, May 21, 2006. She was 71 years old.

Her parents, Clement Alexander Purcell of San Francisco, California and Henrietta Bernice Jeffcoat of Little Rock, Arkansas met and married in Southern California and settled in Whittier. They had three children, Robert Charles "Bob" Purcell, Arthur Dale "Buddy" Purcell, and Barbara Mary.

Pastor Barbara, as she was affectionately called, was born on July 24, 1934 and graduated from Whittier High School. She worked at Security Pacific Bank for a few years and was a general Manager at the Tiki in Monterey Park. She also worked at Charm Furniture, a furniture mfg co owned by her brother, Bob and sister-in-law, Jane.

Pastor Barbara attended Life Bible College and taught a home bible study which grew so large it had to be moved. She rented the Isaac Walton League Hunting Lodge inside the gates of the Whittier Dump. It was there that the bible study evolved into the non-denominational church. People's lives were touched and changed through her ministry, as they were set free of alcoholism, drug addictions, torment and illness.

People were "recycled" at the Whittier Dump.

In 1982, she was ordained as a Foursquare minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As the church continued to grow, she raised up men and women o f God. Over the years, five men and one woman were added to the staff of pastors.

Under her leadership and guidance, a Men's Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Home was established. What began as a vision to feed the homeless by one of the pastors, a monthly breakfast was held. It has now grown into a very large food bank called Heart of Compassion, feeding literally tens of thousands of people every month.

Pastor Barbara traveled extensively all over the world to countries like Haiti, Colombia, England, and Panama, praying for dignitaries and political leaders. She was a safe harbor to those who were ship-wrecked and lives were rebuilt through unconditional love and the ministry of deliverance. Many who thought they were outcasts of life were touched and changed and were sent back into life productive and whole.

Pastor Barbara's faith, wisdom, knowledge, and love have been an inspiration to all that knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Bob and Buddy.

She i survived by her sister-in-law, Jane Purcell, her nephew, David Alexander Purcell, her twin nieces, Carol Curtis and Colleen Meenk, her grand nieces, Melissa Curtis, Sarah Curtis, and Michele Meenk, and her grand nephen Brian Meenk.

She will be greatly missed by her family, pastoral staff, congregation at Cornerstone Celebration Center and everyone whose lives she touched.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, May 27, 2006 at Regency Christian Center International on Pickering Avenue in Whittier and graveside service and interment at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
Funeral arrangements were handled by White-Emerson Mortuary in Whittier.
