Vera Belle Bearden, age 87, of Altus, passed away early Thursday morning, January 16, 2014, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.

Mrs. Bearden was born in Cooperton, Oklahoma, on December 7, 1926, to Ray and Margaret (Harvey) Rollins. Vera began school at Cooperton, moved to Altus at age eleven and completed her schooling at Friendship. On December 18, 1943, she married Leonard R. Bearden and he preceded her in death on December 11, 1969. A hard worker all of her life, Vera worked many jobs at Walls Brothers Truck Stop, Navajo School, Sagamar Restaurant, Friendship Inn and cooked at Eddie Fisher's Baseball Camp. Vera spent over twenty years working at the Officers Club on Altus Air Force Base and retired as the manager. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Altus, Vera was loved by her customers and friends. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, sewing and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Betty Myers and Minnie Robert; one brother, Raymon Rollins and one grandson, David Wayne Bearden, she is survived by two sons, Leonard E. "Sonny" Bearden of Altus and Donnie L. Bearden and wife Jan of Blair; four grandchildren, Christopher Mark Bearden and wife Kim of Austin, Texas, Rusty Bearden and wife Kayla of Edmond, Shelly Tinsley and husband Josh of Altus and Dalton Ray Bearden of Blair; seven great grandchildren, Brooklyn Tinsley, Easton Tinsley, Anna Wilcox, Johnathon Tyler Smith, Anthony David Smith, Alexander Mark Bearden and Sarah Maria Bearden; two sisters, Velma Smiley and husband Jack of Altus and Barbara Jones of Altus along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Vera Bearden will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating. Interment will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home of Altus.
