MATHEWS - Thomas E. 'Ed,' 'Tojo' Jarvis, 80, of Gwynn, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, after a long illness. He was born Oct. 14, 1925, at Bohannon, Va., the son of the late Monroe W. and Mary C. Jarvis. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Walter A. Jarvis, of Portsmouth, Va. Ed attended Peninsula School at Bohannon and spent his early work years with Darling Oyster Company in Hampton, Va. He also served as a combat infantryman in World War II. From 1944 until his discharge in 1946, receiving various decorations and citations including Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany) European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Distinguished Unit Badge, World War II Victory Ribbon, two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He began work at the Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Va., in 1951 as a pipe fitter, retiring in 1982. Ed was also the owner/operator of Thomas E. Jarvis Plumbing and Heating for nearly 50 years. Ed was a honorary member of the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief of Station #3, Gwynns Island, for approximately 25 years. He was a member of Gwynns Island Baptist Church, American Legion Post # 83 Mathews, Order of Odd fellows Lodge #235, Mathews Encampment 47 and the Virginia Rebekahs Association. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy G. Jarvis; sons, James E. and Billy Jarvis of Gwynn, Va.; and daughters, Shirley J. Abrams and husband, Michael, and Christy J. Walker and husband, Roy, of Mathews, Va. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one nephew and two nieces. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Gwynns Island Baptist Church. Burial will follow with military rites in the Gwynns Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1130, Mathews, VA 23109, or the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 723, Mathews, VA 23109. The family wishes to thank Riverside Walter Reed Dialysis Center and Walter Reed Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center for the care and support given to our father and family during his illness. Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, is in charge of the arrangements.
