Theresa "Pat" Abernathy celebrated life for 84 years. She was caregiver to hundreds of Sonoma's children in Pat Abernathy's Day Care that she ran from her house in El Verano for 31 years, mother to four children, former wife of the late Jack P Abernathy, and beloved by all. Theresa Leona Abernathy passed from this life on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 10:30 AM in the same house that had served as her day care for 31 years, which subsequently served as the common residence of "Pat", her daughter Tawny Abernathy, who ultimately served as her caregiver, and her granddaughter Sabrina Bigoski. In the days and evening that preceded her morning departure, she was visited daily by those dear to her including her sons ("Big" John, Bob, and Jerry Abernathy), and her nieces (Teresa Distel-Moritz and Sue Fredricksen) among others.

Theresa has now joined her mother, Magdeline, and father, Joseph Distel, as well as her five brothers: Joe, Raymond, Richard, Leo, and Ted, who preceded her in death. She was loved by many and will be missed dearly.

She was survived by her four children.

She was born in Leadville Colorado and moved to California at the age of 14 going to high school at Tamalpais, Mill Valley. She married Jack (John Percey Abernathy) in 04 Feb 1948. Together they built a house in Mill Valley. Yes, Pat was a carpenter: pulling nails and hammering away, even while pregnant with her third child. This was the first of three houses that they built together. Jack and Theresa "Pat" moved their children to Sonoma for the health of their youngest son, who had allergies.

Upon arrival in Sonoma, Jack & Theresa "Pat" built their second house on Arbor Avenue, between Railroad and Riverside. Theresa ran in-home day care from the various houses in which they lived over the years and could not resist accepting Jerry as her fourth child (i.e., first as a Foster child and then ultimately as Jerry Abernathy, son). Lastly, Jack & Theresa "Pat" built their masterpiece, a home they designed as a day care, where Theresa worked until her retirement and remained for the rest of her life. Her daughter, Tawny, took over "Pat's Day Care," when Theresa's health prevented her from continuing.

Theresa Leona Abernathy will be remembered in a rosary and vigil with family and friends at Duggan's Mission Chapel at 7:00 PM on Friday Oct. 4, 2013. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life for Theresa on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Duggan's Mission Chapel at 10:00 AM. Interment will be held at Valley Memorial Park, Novato on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM . Donations to the charity of your choice are preferred by the family.
