Jessie "Zeke" Underwood, 83, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, 2005, at the Evergreen of Butte Nursing Home.

He was born on Jan. 21, 1922, in Garrison, Ky., one of seven children of Elvie and Nettie Underwood. One sibling, Ada, survives. Jess was raised in Michigan where he enjoyed skiing and hunting.

He began working as a woodsman with his dad at the age of 9, during the Depression.

He continued in the woods until he served in the Army during World War II, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He married the love of his life, Thelma Crick, in 1947 in Michigan. In 1950 they moved to Montana, where he worked as a hard rock miner, a job he thoroughly enjoyed, and was known for his good work ethic.

Jess was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener, trapper and enjoyed being in the woods.

He spent the last several years in Whitehall with family, traveling to Michigan to visit his brothers and sister. Jess was a good husband and father.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years and by his daughter, Mary Underwood.

Surviving children include Rita Underwood of Missoula, Sandy and Rick Madsel of Oregon, Rod and Bobbie Underwood of Elk Park, Mike and Rick Underwood of Waterloo, John and Connie Woodbury of Whitehall, Sally and Terry Woodbury of Whitehall; grandchildren, Brook, Ryan, Jennifer, Michelle, Bon, Nick, Bridge, Autumn, John, Terry, Laurie and Paula; 16 great-grandchildren; and special friend of the family, Wanda Stewart.

Relatives and friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday in the Duggan Dolan Chapel for visitations. Funeral services will be conducted at noon in the chapel. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
