Canadian Army General. He graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario in June 1905. He served as Commanding Officer RCHA Brigade from 1916 until 1922. In December 1917 he was evacuated due to illness and recovered at the Prince of Wales Hospital for Officers at Marylebone, England. He returned to duty with his brigade in time for the German Offensive in the Spring of 1918. He was promoted Colonel in 1925. On his subsequent promotion to Brigadier General in 1930, he was appointed to command the Royal Military College of Canada, a post he held until 1935. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 193e and served as District Officer Commanding 2nd Military District from 1935 until 1938. He was Master-General of Ordnance, National Defence Headquarters from 1938 until 1940. During World War II he served as General Officer Commander in Chief Atlantic Command from 1940 until 1943. In 1943 he was appointed as Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) and received the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). and retired from the military the following year.
