OBITUARY.
JAMES E, GIFFORD. a prominent and highly esteemed, citizen of this town, and widely known as a member of the Society of Friends, died very suddenly at his home in West Falmouth on Saturday evening last, from heart disease, aged 68years, 6 months.
During his life the deceased, had held many positions of honor and trust, and for a quarter of a century was business manager and in charge of the Union store at West Falmouth. In 1880 he was elected representative to the state legislature, and re-elected the following year. By his efforts an act was passed in 1880 giving to widows of husbands dying intestate and leaving no children real estate that-may be left up to $5000 in value, an act highly commended as in the direction of needed reform toward justice for women. Among the many other positions which he filled were those of selectman, assessor, postmaster, moderator of the town meetings, executor of wills, administrator of estates and auditor of town accounts. All the places which he occupied were filled with ability and unquestioned integrity. He leaves a widow, the daughter of Benjamin Bowerman of St. Albans, Me., and one daughter, Martha J., the wife of Samuel H. Wilmore. A son, B. Herbert, died in 1875, at the age of 18 years.
The funeral took place from the Friends meeting-house Tuesday noon, and was largely attended by relatives and friends. The interment was in the Friends' cemetery.
