US Congressman. Born near Morgantown, Caernarvon Township, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Princeton College in 1847, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849, and practiced law in Reading, Pennsylvania. He represented Berks County on the board of revenue commissioners for the State of Pennsylvania, in 1860, was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1860-66) and a member of the Pennsylvania State board of charities in 1870. In 1873, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was vice president of the Union Trust Company of Philadelphia and president of the Clymer Iron Company. He died at age 56 in Reading, Pennsylvania.
