U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1820 and commenced to practice law in Reading, Pennsylvania. Moving to Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, he was elected as a representative to the county seat of Schuylkill County. In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. After leaving Congress, he was appointed canal commissioner of Pennsylvania, serving (1839 to 1842) and appointed on November 8, 1842, a commissioner to adjust and settle certain claims under the treaty with the Cherokee Indians of 1835. Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
