Daughter of William J. Morris and Catharine M. Williams, wife of Samuel D. Potter and mother of Sarah, Beulah, Louis M., Carrie, John B., Laura B. and Theodore Potter.

Obituary - Mrs. Maria Elizabeth Potter, 81 years old, widow of Captain Samuel Potter, and one of the oldest residents of Gravesend Beach, died yesterday from a complication of ailments due to her age, at her home on Centre place. Mrs. Potter was one of the original members of the Cropsey Avenue M.E. Church, which her father helped to found, and her funeral services will be held in the church on Sunday afternoon, interment following in Gravesend Cemetery. Mrs. Potter was born in Gravesend, the daughter of the late William W. Morris, a descendent of Robert Morris, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. As a girl she and two of her sisters organized the first Sunday School in Gravesend on a boat on Gravesend Bay and she had always been active in church and Sunday school work. Mrs. Potter was for many years an active member of the Ladies' Aid Society connected with the church. Her husband, who died fourteen years ago, was a Sandy Hook pilot and her father was also a seafaring man. Mrs. Potter is survived by three sons, Lewis M. Potter, formerly an alderman, and widely known in Gravesend; John and Theodore Potter; three daughters, Mrs. George Ryder, Mrs. Edgar M. Fyte, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. Everett Jones, of Patchogue, four grandchildren, two brothers, Daniel W. Morris, of Bensonhurst, and Lewis M. Morris of Perth Amboy, N.J., and a sister, Mrs. Louisa Aumack.
