Mildred “Millie” Barrow Wheeler, of McAlester, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015, at her home. She was born May 26, 1922, in Hamlin, Texas. She graduated from Hamlin High School in 1939. After college at John Tarleton and medical technology training at Scott and White in Temple, Texas, she moved to McAlester and worked at the McAlester Clinic, where she met her future husband, Homer C. Wheeler. They were married on June 18, 1946, in Hamlin, Texas. Survivors include two daughters, Jane Wheeler and Sam Bowman, of Oklahoma City, Judy Wheeler Purma and Joe Purma, Taneyville, Missouri, and son, Dr. John Wood and Sherry Wood, of Chesterfield, Missouri; five grandchildren, Brendan Wood and Natasha Wood, Ballwin, Missouri, Jesse Purma and Kristi Purma, Round Hill, Virginia, Jamie Purma and Pamela Purma, Rogersville, Missouri, David Wood and Kathleen Purma, Aurora, Colorado, and Laura Kinkead and Joe Kinkead, San Diego, California, and 10 great-grandchildren, Ethan Wood, Sarenna Wood, Shadye Purma, Chase Braden, Bailey Braden, John Wood, Sarah Wood, Anna Wood, Elliot Purma and Elise Purma. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bishop Chapel of Memories. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Joe Purma, John Wood, Sam Bowman, Brendan Wood, David Wood, Jesse Purma and Jamie Purma. Memorials may be made to Girl Scouts or United Methodist Women.
