''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

Charles Ortega Arland's father, Charles Henry Arland, came from Leicester, England in the 1840s, together with his grandparents, Thomas Arland, and Ann Main Arland. They settled on the land purchased by Charles H. to farm, at Cross Plains, Dane co., Wisconsin. Charles Henry established himself as a successful farmer in in the area.

Adelaide 'Adde' Dodge was part of the Dodge family who came from Nova Scotia and settled mostly in Southwestern Wisconsin, and Northwestern Wisconsin.
His mother died at Cross Plains, Wisconsin, months after his birth in 1869, leaving his father a widower.

We know that Charles Ortega's mother died in 1869.
We know that by 1874, Charles H. had remarried to Mary Elizabeth Hodgson who was from Arena, Iowa co., Wisconsin, nearby Ridgeway, Addie's home town.

Arena was also the home of a number of Charles H.'s Dodge in-laws, Charles Ortega's grandparents.

Charles Ortega Arland is found in the 1880 US Federal Census for Ridgeway, Iowa, Wisconsin, living in the household of his maternal grandparents..John Archibald Dodge and Lucy Ann Dill Dodge.

Did he live with his grandparents after the death of his mother, and again in the next decade instead of his father and his new wife who moved to South Dakota?

The death of her husband Nathan in 1874 left Mary Elizabeth Hodgson a widow with several children of her own.

The new Charles H. Arland family lived in Cross Plains until their move to South Dakota between 1880 and 1890. Charles H. Arland remained in South Dakota for approx. several decades. He is listed as head of household in 1910, Whitman, Washington. Mary E. died in 1912. Charles H. remarried in 1916 to Josephine E. Mabbott. She was previously Mrs. Andrew Brown, both originally from Wisconsin. They married in Montana.

Charles Ortega Arland's Uncle Richard and his family had already left Cross Plains for Washington. They are listed in the 1880 Census for Chehalis, Washington

Evidence of the details of Charles Ortega Arland's personal life is conjectural. His military career is based on small number of military censuses.

In general, although he may have initially enlisted in Seattle, he seems to have been based in San Francisco with the 4th Infantry, Batt. B, Dept. of California, moving between the Presidio, Alcatraz, and various detachments
to other places.

Charles Ortega appears to have gone into the Militia or Military at the age of 22. about 1892. His birthplace was 'Madison', and his residence is 'Seattle, Washington'. He listed as having been
recruited in Seattle, Washington, by a Lt. Goodwin, perhaps with the encouragement from his relatives who were living at Garfield. He is listed as a 'laborer'.

He was posted on the 18th of June 1892 from Seattle, Washington to Fort Sherman, Idaho. He returned to California with the Militia. He was a member of the Department of California - a Militia - 4 Infantry, Battalion B.

In 1893 from the 3rd of January to the 6th, at the age of 23, he was on temporary Detached Service from the 4th Infantry to repair the telephone lines.

In 1895, he was sent to Lake Grand, Coeur d'Alene Rural, Kootenai, Idaho, age. 26, from 18 June 1995 - 17 Sept 1895. 'Absent' on 19 Nov 1895 for a 21 day on Furlough to Lake Grand Alene, Idaho. As well as 'Detached service' in the same year when he marched to Fruitland, Utah (reserve of Uintah and Ouray).

The 6 of December, age 27, he is present at the Presidio, Angel Island, Alcatraz and at Fort Mason.

A new paper article in the San Francisco Call, vol. 81 Number 7, 7, states that Arland complete training as Sharpshooter for the Dept of California (a precursor of the State Militia?)

The next year, 1897, he seems to be stationed at Alcatraz Island, San Franciso Harbor,California.

Post Name: Alcatraz Island Post Location: California Post Commander: James M Robertson Military Place: Alcatraz Island, San Franciso Harbor,California

The Military Census of 1898 indicates that on the 19th of November 1898, because of 'Expirey of Service', he was discharged at Camp Forse (Fort Walker), Huntington, Alabama. Does this suggest that he took part in the Spanish American War in Cuba? He was listed as a Sergant with an Excellent record.

The military census for the 7th of Jan 1899
notes a further inscription at San Francisco, Cal. as well as a Discharge at Manila, Philippines.

22 July 1900, notice of his engagement to Violet Slatheson is published in the San Francisco Chronicle , 22 July 1900, Page 13
Don't know if they married.

The US census of 1900 for California shows Charles O. Arland as a resident of the Presidio of San Francisco Various organizations, U.S.Army Ward 41, San Francisco, California, United States.

1899 - 1902, Charles O. Arland has taken part in the Philippine-American War. as a Soldier. He enlisted 19th Nov. 1898. Went to Manila, Philippine Territory.

1902 - he was discharged on 6 Jan. 1902. Manila, Philippine Territory

1902- Feb 7, He was requested to report to Major Bernar A. Byrne, 13th Infantry. Fort Santiago, Manila.

see: p 776, ARMY AND NAVY JOURNAL. April 5, 1902
"Commissary Sergt. Stanley J. Erazmus, 20th Inf.; 1st Sergt. John Smith, and Sergt. Charles O. Arland, 31st Co., Coast Art., ll report to Major Bernard A. Byrne, 13th Inf., President for the examining board convened at Fort Santiago, Manila, for examination as to their qualifications for appointments as commissary sergeants. (Feb,7, D. N. P.)"

What did he do between 1902 and 1921 when he died in Manila, Philippine Territory?
Did he marry Violette or someone else? Did he come back to California or Washington. Did he see his family again?
