Freddie was participating in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa in the vicinity of Thon Hai when he was killed by small arms fire. A comrade that was with him at the time he was shot had this to say, "He was a tall, very handsome African-American. He was my Weapons Squad leader and played it straight down the middle when it came to race no exceptions for color or greed, all he ask was that you do your job. I was with at the end during an assault near Thon Hai, a suspected NVA stronghold about six kilometers west of Que Son. He was shot high in thigh, severing the main artery there was nothing the medic could do. Before he died SSG Thomas took out pictures of his family, his wife Louise and young daughters Kimberly and Vernita, and was holding them when he passed. A tragic scene forever burned in my memory. I have always wanted to tell his family what a good man he was."
