Gene attended the Lowell School in Salt Lake City and loved being outdoors and playing with the other boys in his neighborhood.
On September 30, 1907, Gene came home from playing football with his friends from school and told his mother that a "dirty swipe had put (him) out." When he had dove to tackle a friend running with the football, Gene had been kicked in the head and rendered unconscious for several minutes.
The next day, Gene had seemed to recovered just fine and went to the fair that day. When a jockey fell from his horse during a race, however, he fainted and was quickly taken home to his bed, where he remained for the rest of the week.
It wasn't until Friday that Gene's condition severely worsened. His family was drawn to his room around 4 o'clock in the morning and found him acting very strangely, and a doctor was quickly summoned. After an examination, Gene was found to be suffering from a concussion.
He was given medicines and ordered to rest. All was decently well until Saturday afternoon, when Gene woke up complaining of severe back pain. He soon slipped into a coma and passed away at 5:45 pm. He was thirteen years old.
Gene's funeral was well-attended by friends and family. His pallbearers were all friends and playmates from the Lowell school, who missed their friend dearly.
