Doc was born May 16, 1926, in Pontiac, the youngest son of Elmer and Edna (Stehl) Branz.
He was educated in rural schools and graduated Pontiac High School, and the University of Illinois, with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He served 2 years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and, in 1956, established his small-animal and farm-animal practice and surgical office on North Bloomington Street in Streator. He retired and closed his clinic in 1993.
He was a lifetime member of the U of I Alumni Association, the Illinois State Veterinary Medicine Association, Streator American Legion Post 217 and Christ Episcopal Church in Streator. He enjoyed his family and friends, gardening, tinkering with his riding mower and bluegrass and waltz music.
He is survived by his daughter, Michele (Miller) (William) Dawson, of Houston; grandchildren, Seth Dawson, Eli (Lindsay) Dawson, Kaetlyn (Miller) (Dan) Hubbard, and Tessa Miller; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews locally; as well as nieces, Judith (Branz) (Ed) Brown and Linda (Branz) Fox, all of Tampa, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Edith J. (Walker) Branz; two sons, Michael J. Miller and Mark A. Miller; his parents; a brother, Harold Branz; and sister, Bernadine (Branz) Ficken.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Elias Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mark Geisler officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time services begin.
Burial services will be conducted privately at Riverview Cemetery, Streator.
Memorials may be directed to any animal shelter or charity of the donor's choice.
