Funeral services for Mrs. Effie Frances Ames Rochford, 75, 1940 James Avenue S., descendant of a pioneer family, who died Monday, were held in abeyance Tuesday pending arrival of a son and daughter.Services are tentative planned for Friday or Saturday at Welander-Quist mortuary, 2301 Dupont Avenue S. Mrs. Rochford was a daughter of Dr. Albert A. Ames, elected mayor of Minneapolis several times, and granddaughter of Dr. A.E. Ames, first docotr and first postmaster of Minneapolis and a founder of the University of Minnesota.Mrs. Rochford, wife of Dr. William E. Rochford, was valedictorian of the university's class of 1892 and was the first woman at the university to be elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma academic sorority.After graduation, Mrs. Rochford taught about 10 years in the Minneapolis schools, including West and Roosevelt high schools.She taught Sunday school at the former Lowry Hill Congregational church and at the time of her death was alumni president of her university graduating class.Surviving besides her husband are two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Melin, Carpenteria, Calif., and Mrs. H.M. Russell French, Durban, South Africa; three sons, William, Houston, Texas; Daniel, New York City, and Philip, Minneapolis, and one brother, John Ames, Minneapolis.
