John Banister, a midshipman in the United States Navy, was born 24 February 1815 at "Osmore" in Amelia County, Virginia. He entered the Navy in February 1829. Banister died on 3 June 1835 while attached to the United States Sloop of War NATCHEZ, and is buried in Cemitorio Dos Ingleses in Gamboa, Rio De Janeiro.
