John Banister, a midshipman in the United States Navy, was born 24 February 1815 at "Osmore" in Amelia County, Virginia. He entered the Navy in February 1829. Banister died on 3 June 1835 while attached to the United States Sloop of War NATCHEZ, and is buried in Cemitorio Dos Ingleses in Gamboa, Rio De Janeiro. Sacred to the memory of Midshipman, John Banister late of United States Navy who was born on the 21st of February 1815 in Osmore, in the County of Amelia in the State of Virginia. He came into the service of his country in February 1829 and died in Rio de Janeiro on the 3rd June 1835 while attached to the United States Sloop of War 'Natchez'
