George Royce Cassels-Smith, a longtime partner in the Gieske & Niemann Inc. tobacco brokerage of Baltimore, died Friday after a short illness at Broadmead, the Cockeysville retirement community where he lived for the last 10 years.
A memorial service for the 88-year-old Mr. Cassels-Smith was held yesterday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Glyndon.
Born in Omaha, Neb., he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925. He became a partner in the Gieske & Niemann firm in 1928.
In 1931 he married the former Evelyn de Driver Gieske, a daughter of one of the company's founders. The couple lived in the Towson area for most of their married life. Mrs. Cassels-Smith died in 1979.
During World War II, Mr. Cassels-Smith commanded a destroyer escort that made 14 round trips across the North Atlantic, and he also served as executive officer aboard a troop ship crossing the Pacific.
He is survived by a daughter, Evelyn C. de Gast of Onancock, Va.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggested memorial contributions to St. John's Episcopal Church in Glyndon.
