Harvey married his wife Lucy on 17 April 1844 in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa
His father was Pardon Allen and his mother was Ruth P. Tyler the were married on 23 April 1812.
Harvey Sessions Allen, a well known pioneer of the county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Hogan on the 17th instant, at the age of 85 years. Mr. Allen was born at Warren, Mass. April 9, 1816 and was one of seven children, three brothers, one older and two younger than himself still living. He was married at Burlington, Iowa, in 1844, and has three children, a son, Aylmer, now in Honduras, Central America and two daughters. Mrs. Ruth Van Voorhies and Mrs. Charles Hogan, having made his home with the latter since 1885. For sixteen years previous to that time he followed his trade of gun smith at Placerville, where he will be remembered by many residents.
Mr. Allen came to California in "49 and mined for years, in this county and in Aurora, Nevada. In 1850 he went back to Iowa for his little family, but found his wife dying of consumption and she soon crossed to the other shore, her remains being laid to rest at Bellevue, Iowa. He left his children with his people in Massachusetts and returned to Placerville in 1851. In 1863 he went back and returned to this state with his family the same year. He also visited his old home in 1876, to see his mother, who was than living, but died in 1885 at the age of 95 years,
Mr. Allen experienced the ups and downs of a miner's life and through all the Golden Rule was his religion or maxim, while his patience and gentleness of character were proverbial.
The funeral occurred Thursday, Rev. C.C. Peirce conducting the services and the remains were laid to rest in the City Cemetery.
