Alford "Al" Ray Thurman, long time Odessa resident, lost his fight with lung cancer on February 11, 2014.

Alford was born on November 2, 1949 in Clovis, NM to Malcolm Lee Thurman and Virginia Mae Gurley Thurman. The family moved from NM to OK, and back to NM, this time settling in Portales. Alford attended the schools there, and graduated in 1968. In May of 1969, Alford joined the US Air Force, doing basic training at Lackland AFB in Wichita Falls, and was then transferred to Shepherd AFB in San Antonio, TX. Alford was honorably discharged from the Air Force to care for his father who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident.

On August 18, 1970, Alford married Mary Squibb, also of Portales. Following the birth of their second daughter in 1973, the young family moved to Odessa, TX, where they remained until his death.

During his early years in Odessa, Alford made his living driving trucks. During the course of the 25 years he drove, he covered 48 states and Canada. Some of the local companies he drove for were Champion Chemicals, G & RG Trucking, and Schwerman Trucking, and Express Energy, among others.

Alford's lifelong passion was motorcycles. He got his first taste of riding when he was still in diapers. His parents were avid riders and that love was passed on to both their sons. Alford was rarely without a bike. This passion brought many friends into his life. He and his wife joined a local group of bikers, the T-Twisters. Alford was a 15 year member of this group, and an officer in good standing when he passed away.

Family members that deeply miss him are his wife of 43 years, Mary; his two daughters, Latisha Ponce de Leon and Nicole Jensen; seven grandchildren, Steven Ponce de Leon, Sam Ponce de Leon, Zackary Zavala, Zane Zavala, Ryan Zavala, O'Ryann Jensen and Ryden Jensen. Also surviving is his brother Mike, of Las Cruces.

Family visitation and funeral services will be held at Acres West Funeral Chapel. The family will receive visitors from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, February 14, 2014. Funeral service will be Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11am, officiated by Brother Pete Putman. The burial will follow at American Heritage Memorial Park and Cemetery, on FM 1788, a mile and a half north of Highway 191.
