He was a shipbuilder from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, who relocated to Virginia during the 1830s. He and his family owned and inhabited Cobb's Island (formerly Sand Shoals), near Oyster, Virginia for several decades, and operated a ship salvage operation in that area. He is known among the collectible decoy makers.

NOTE: As a result of the October 1896 severe storm and destruction to Cobb's Island, Nathan F. Cobb's grave was removed from Cobb's Island in 1897, and possibly reinterred in the same cemetery as his son, Albert F. Cobb (1836-1890): Cape Charles Cemetery, Cape Charles, Northampton Co., VA. It is also believed that Nathan Cobb Sr may be buried in the Richardson Family Cemetery in Cape Charles with his wife Nancy Roberts Richardson. The tombstone shown in the photo is located in the Richardson Family Cemetery and was placed there in 2023 along with a tombstone for his wife Nancy Roberts Richardson. The Nathan Cobb listed here in Oyster is the same man as the one listed in the Richardson Family cemetery.
