FRANK HATHAWAY KILLED BY TRAIN
Son of Police Officer Meets Death From Accident in
Railroad Yards at Mason City

Frank H. Hathaway, aged 22 years, son of Police
Officer Isaac Hathaway of Des Moines, died yesterday
in the hospital at Mason City as the result of
injuries received yesterday morning when caught
between two cars at that city while working as a
switchman in the Northwestern yards.

Police Officer Hathaway will bring the body of his son
to Des Moines today. As inquest will be held by the
Story County Coroner to fix the blame for the
accident. Hathaway had worked only a short time as a
switchman. Hathaway was well known in this city,
having lived here for many years. About a year ago,
at the death of his mother, he left for Mason City and
has since been employed there.

Funeral arrangements will be made later.

Former Des Moines Boy Pinned in Coupling When Flying
Switch Throws Car
Into Sidetrack
Frank H. Hathaway, aged 22 years, formerly of Des
Moines, a son of Police Officer Isaac Hathaway of Des
Moines, died yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the
Story hospital at Mason City as a result of injuries
received at 4 o'clock yesterday morning while
switching cars in the Northwestern railroad yards at
Mason City.
Mr. Hathaway was coupling a string of cars at the time
of the accident. The rest of the crew were making a
flying switch at the same time. A car was sent flying
onto the track where Hathaway was coupling cars.
Unable to see the car and realize his danger, he was
caught between two freight cars in the string and
badly crushed between the knees and the thigh. He was
taken to the Story hospital where he died at 3 o'clock
in the afternoon.
Frank's brother, Walter Hathaway, yard foreman at
Mason City, telegraphed to Des Moines for the father.
Officer Hathaway left yesterday morning for Mason
City. He will bring the body to Des Moines.
A coroner's inquest will be held at Mason City to
place the blame for the accident.
Frank Hathaway lived in Des Moines for eight years. He
went to Mason City a year ago and followed various
occupations until a few weeks ago when he entered the
employ of the Northwestern railroad as switchman. His
mother, Mrs. Isaac Hathaway, died last December. His
father has been connected with the local police force
for ten years and at present is on the Northwestern
depot beat.
Mr. Hathaway is survived by four brothers and three
sisters. They are Walter Hathaway of Mason City, Mrs.
Gertrude Day of Des Moines, Mrs. Alice Pierce of Des
Moines, Clyde Hathaway of Des Moines, Goldie Hathaway
of Des Moines, Stella Hathaway of Des Moines, and
Vernie Hathaway of Des Moines.
A coroner's inquest probably will be held in Mason
City today.
