Frances was born in Pennsylvania on August 2, 1835. She was the 11th child of 12 children born to Joseph Luce and Betsy (Soverhill) Luce.

Frances was the baby girl of this large family, with 1 brother born 3 years after her, making him the baby of the family. His name was Hiram C. Luce.

Frances' father, Joseph died in 1842 when she was just 7 years old. 3 years later, her beloved mother, Betsy died, leaving Frances an orphan at 10 years old.

Frances was the 1st wife of Isaac Sanders Mahan, a lawyer. They were joined in marriage in 1857. They adopted 2 children; Jennie F. Rowland and Susie P. Rowland, twins, both born in 1865.

OBITUARY: Entitled "Called Home"
Frances Susan, wife of Isaac Sanders Mahan, of this city, died at the residence of her brother, Charles D. Luce, near Osseo, Hillsdale County, Michigan, on October 9, 1869, aged 34 years.

She had been suffering with consumption, and was on a health tour with her husband, when death called her from earth.

Her remains were brought home for interment, which was done on last Sabbath, in the presence of a large concourse of people. Rev. Mr. Love, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church officiated.
