Pioneer Aviator. He was a 19th-century British inventor and pioneer aviator. Percy Sinclair Pilcher built a glider called "The Hawk," which broke the world distance record when he flew it on the grounds of Stanford Hall in England. On September 30, 1899, Pilcher had planned to demonstrate his motor-driven triplane but had mechanical problems. Instead, he used "The Hawk" and was flying over a crowd of onlookers when the tail broke off and the plane crashed. He died a few days later from his injuries, never regaining consciousness. At the age of 13, he enlisted in the Royal Navy for seven years. He became an engineering apprentice with the shipbuilders, Randolph, Elder, and Company, of Govan in Glasgow, learning his skills for aviation. His glider is on display at Stanford Hall, and he was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame in 2011.
