He began flying combat missions over Vietnam with the 15th TFS in May 1963 and was forced to eject over North Vietnam on his 196th combat mission on 27 September 1965.

before being released on 12 February 1973
during Operation Homecoming.

The Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross,
and two Bronze Stars with Valor device
