JACOB AMEND

Theodore Amend of St. Paul arrived in the city Wednesday morning to make arrangements for the funeral and burial of his father, Jacob Amend, who died on Friday, May 9th, at the home of his son-in-law, Arthur Groeschel, at Seattle, Washington.

Jacob Amend was born at Elizabeth, N. J., Sept. 2, 1851 and when an infant his father, John Amend passed away. In 1857 he accompanied his mother and two sisters to Wisconsin and they located at St. Nazianz, Manitowoc county where he grew to manhood and learned the trade of carpenter and cabinetmaker. On Oct. 10, 1876 he was united in marriage to Catherine Bauer and the same year they came to Chilton where Mr. Amend secured employment with the Dorschel, Schultz Sash, Door and Blind factory for a period of forty years he was a trusty employe of this concern.

On June 1, 1895 his wife died and after that his daughter, Miss Elizabeth, kept house for him. Some four years ago his health began to fail and in November 1916 he and his daughter moved to St. Paul where they made their home with the only son, Theo. During his four years illness he underwent five operation which left him in a weakened condition and unable to bear the rigors of the Minnesota winters. In July 1918, believing that a change of climate might be beneficial to him he went to Seattle to live with his son-in-law and a short time ago new complications set in and his death followed.

Mr. Amend was a respected citizen of our city for a half century and it is safe to say that he had not an enemy in the town. On the contrary he enjoyed a large following of friends and acquaintances who will remember his pleasant smile and greeting and feel sad to think that they will see him about no more. He was active in all civic affairs and a member of some to the prominent societies of this city.
His remains were brought to this city on Wednesday evening and taken to the Pfeffer Undertaking parlors where they lay in state until Thursday morning when they were taken to the St. Mary's Church were Requiem Mass was celebrated by Re. Fr. L. N. Thelen with interment in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Theodore Amend of St. Paul, Minn., and four daughters, Mrs. James R. Kelley of San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Edw. Miller of Weed, Calif., Mrs. Arthur Groeschel of Seattle, Wash., and Mrs. Thos. J. Grogan of Milwaukee.
