Son of Henry and Ann Allen Rives. He fought for the C.S.F. in Civil War. Colonel Rives was wounded during the battle of Elkhorn Tavern, Pea Ridge, Arkansas, on March 8, 1862, and died of his wound the next day. Colonel Rives was promoted to Brigadier General subsequent to his death. It is not known whether this promotion was posthumous, or whether the commission simply reached him after his death.
He was the husband of Eliza Caroline (Townes) Rives, the father of three boys and three girls.
