ROSE CREEK -- A Mass of Christian burial will be offered for Edward Merten at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rose Creek with the Revs. Rubin Spinler and Frank Enright co-officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Merten, 94, of Sacred Heart Hospice in Austin, a retired Rose Creek-area farmer, died Tuesday (Jan. 28, 1997) at the hospice.
He was born Oct. 13, 1902, in Meyer, Iowa. On Oct. 19, 1927, he married Olivia Mullenbach in Johnsburg. They farmed in the Meyer, Johnsburg and Rose Creek areas for 38 years and moved into Rose Creek after retirement in 1965. His wife died Aug. 14, 1993. Mr. Merten was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Survivors include four sons, Clarence and Harold, both of Austin, and Donald and Ronald, both of Rose Creek; three daughters, Beatrice Healy of Eagan, Minn., Gladys White of Austin and Barbara Nalan of Grand Rapids, Minn.; 20 grandchidren; and seven great-grandchildren. A son, six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin and an hour before the service Saturday at the church. There will be a wake service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
