Alice was born at home, the 5th of six children of Theodore and Sophie Bost. She moved to California with her family at age 14. She became engaged in 1893 to a man who then died in an accident. After working as a bookkeeper, she married Will Johnstone in 1902. Her husband was a successful banker, farmer, politician and public servant. They had three daughters, Margaret, Dorothy and Elizabeth (Jean). Will died in 1937 while travelling with his wife in Canada.
